Strategies for sustainable tourism development in Afghanistan: A SWOT and thematic analysis

Purpose: The study explores and identify effective strategies for achieving sustainable development in tourism and tourist destinations. It seeks to analyze current practices, assess their impact on the environment, economy, and local communities, and propose practical solutions that promote long-term sustainability while enhancing the quality of the visitor experience and preserving cultural and natural heritage.
Methodology: In this studies, used thematic and SWOT analysis, the data collected through questionnaire and focus group discussion, the sample selected random and snowballing.
Results: This research finds that achieving sustainable tourism development requires integrating environmental practices, community involvement, cultural preservation, economic support, strong governance, tourist awareness, and technological innovation backed by a strong internal position and favorable external opportunities, despite challenges like funding gaps, coordination issues, and external risks.
Conclusions: The study show strong potential for sustainable tourism development, supported by favorable internal (IFE = 3.36) and external (EFE = 3.65) factors, while emphasizing environmental protection, community benefits, and cultural preservation. Expanding investment, partnerships, and stakeholder engagement while addressing political instability, climate change, and coordination challenges is essential for resilient and sustainable tourism growth.
Recommendations: The recommendations emphasize strengthening environmental sustainability, protecting cultural heritage, supporting local businesses, and securing adequate funding for sustainable tourism development.
They also highlight the need for stronger governance, institutional capacity, stakeholder coordination, and public-private partnerships to ensure long-term tourism sustainability.
And developed comprehensive set of strategies and recommendations including best practices, policy guidelines, community engagement methods, environmental management techniques, and sustainable destination frameworks that support responsible, inclusive, and environmentally conscious tourism development.
